How to Get Red Dirt Out of Carpet and Floors

Let red dirt dry completely, vacuum it out slowly with a HEPA vacuum, then blot what is left with a little dish soap in cool water. Never scrub it wet first; water turns the iron-rich soil into a stain that spreads. Old or set-in stains usually need a hot water extraction carpet cleaner.

Why is red dirt so hard to clean?

The red soil around Redding foothills and trails gets its color from iron oxide. The particles are very fine and bind to fibers and grout when wet, which is why red mud stains more than ordinary brown dirt.

Getting Red Dirt Out of Carpet

  • Let it dry. Wet mud spreads. Wait until it is fully dry and crumbly.
  • Break it up. Loosen dried clumps with a stiff brush or butter knife.
  • Vacuum slowly. Several passes in different directions.
  • Blot, do not rub. A teaspoon of clear dish soap in two cups of cool water on a white cloth.
  • Rinse and blot dry. Plain water, then dry towels pressed firmly.
  • Test first. Try any product on a hidden spot. Avoid bleach and hot water on fresh stains.

Grout, Tile and Hard Floors

Vacuum or dry-mop first, then clean with a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft grout brush. For light grout that has gone pink, a paste of baking soda and water on a brush often lifts it. Seal grout afterward so the next round does not soak in.

Keeping Red Dirt Out

  • A coarse outdoor mat plus a washable indoor mat at every door.
  • A shoes-off rule, with a bench and a boot tray by the door.
  • A towel by the door for dog paws after trail walks.
  • Hose off bikes and boots outside before bringing them in.
